The Ancient City

It depicts the ramains of south-west tower of Tanagra. The fortification was built at that time, it was composed of blocks of dark grey limestones. The circuit measures about 2 miles, There were some 60 towers at intervals of about 100ft. Part of one tower on the Western end of the south wall - the only visible piece of the fortifications. There were probably four gateways, for the roads to Thebes, Delion (the port of Tanagra), Athens and Platea. The connections in the Greek were strong, and the trades should be easier among different cities. Tanagra was considered one of the most prominent Boeotian cities in antiquity. The most famous objects to come out of the site can without doubt be said to be the numerous terracotta figurines. The Female figurine from Wheaton College Permanent Collection is the early Hellenistic example, which is one of those objects from Tanagra that make Tanagra famous. Standing women formed the greater part of the Tanagra repertoire. The typical form of the developed Tanagra style of 250-200 BC is shown in Wheaton Permanent Collection.
