Marjorie Gelb Jones

Marjorie Gelb Jones graduated from Wheaton College as President of the class of 1962. She majored in history and travelled abroad her junior year. After graduation, she continued her studies, received a graduate degree, and went on to become a professor in history, Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. She also wrote a published biography, titled: "Frances Yates and the Hermetic Tradition". She attended the exhibtion at the Bloomsbury Workshop in London while she was there doing research for the biography at the nearby Warburg Institute. On August 23, 2000, Ms. Jones purchased Sonya Redway Reading from the Bloomsbury Workshop in London for 550 pounds of sterling. Jones describes her initial interest in the painting: “I am enthralled with the 1920s and the Bloomsbury culture/history & frankly could afford it (barely), the painting spoke to me.” Five years later, Tony Bradshaw from the Bloomsbury Workshop indicated that the painting's value had doubled, to 1100 pounds of sterling, from its original purchase price. Ms. Jones brought the painting to her home in Bronxville, N.Y. and housed it there until 2011.
