Arthur Stone Dewing

Arthur Stone Dewing who lived from 1880-1971 purchased the Red-Figure Attic Lekythos. Dewing earned his B.A. and Doctorate at Harvard University. Dewing was the professor of philosophy and economics at Harvard University. Dewing's collections of numismatics started in the 1920's were he also started to collect Greek vases. Dewing collected from the 1920's till the 1960's. Dewing joined the American Numismatic Society in 1928. He went on to become the president of the ANS in 1947 till 1949. Dewing created a foundation to house all of his collection including the Lekythos, which he named the Dewing Greek Numismatic Foundation in 1965. It is believed that the Lekythos was purchased between in Greece in 1934 and 1964 on one of his frequent vacations that he took, where he eventually brought it back to the USA.
