Lamnos The Prehistorical Myrina

Myrina is the principle town of the Lemonos island and is noted for its vast necropolis, which dates to the Hellenistic period. The first terra-cottas from Mytins were discovered about 1874. The excavations of the French school of Athens at Myrina was the best results of the enquiry at that time (1880-1883).These excavations have been followed by many others of a more doubtful character, but certainly attended with success, so that almost all the museums in Europe now possess authentic terra-cottas from Myrina. The tanagra figurine from Wheaton College permanent collection was bought from Merrin gallery. It can be speculated that was graved from Myrina.

The Salomon Reinach, who was working on that proved the importance and authenticity of Tanagra figurines from Myrina in his essay. He indicated those forged groups of tanagra figures. The vogue of Greek terracottas began in Paris about 1873, but some forgeries said theirs were found in early 1820 in some places, which cannot be defined breifly; also the provenance cannot be identified by those forgeries dealers. In addition, Salomon Reinach emphasized that the excavation of Myrina was one of the most successful excavations.
