Amen-Gulley Cottage

Amen-Gulley Cottage/House was on 5 Howard Street, where now the Center for Global Education locates. The house was purchased by Wheaton in 1926. The name of this house came from Elisabeth Wheeler Amen, Professor of Psychology and Education from 1925 to 1968 and Elsie E. Gulley, Professor of History from 1925 to 1954. Prof. Amen was also the founder of Amen nursery school. The Austin family vacated Dr. Mack’s House after Commencement in 1960, and then temporarily settled at Amen-Gulley Cottage. Unfortunately, the Austins were asked to move out again for the October 14th-16th convocation in order to host honor guest John Kirkland Clark and his family since they came for the dedication of the new residential hall. Later on Prof. Austin and his family moved back to this comfort and quiet cottage, and finally settled at 20 Elm Street (the Austin House) by December 20th, 1960.
