Arriving to Wheaton

Wheaton College gained the addition of Lawson's piece in 1979, not long after its restoration by Betty Jones. A letter from President Emerson in the mid 80s indicates that the piece was not included in an exhibition in the Beard and Weil Gallery upstairs in Watson. The letter thanked the Kozol's for their generous donation and explained why the piece was not included in the exhibition. Because of the pieces extensive conservation, it remains in great condition and is framed in a beautiful, wooden frame. The painting remains as a tool for students to study, research and examine. Though the painting's journey until arriving at Wheaton has been a bit ambiguous, one must keep in mind that provenance research is itself one of ambiguity.
