The Mystery of 1908

1908 remains as a mysterious year for this provanance research project. In the object file, one of the descriptions of the painting actually has a question mark next to the date. This may be an accurate questioning because everywhere I have searched The Harlem River (Rivershacks), 1908 does not come up anywhere - not in books, exhibition catalogues, auction websites, or a simple Google search. To combat this issue, I searcued major museum websites that Lawson's work is displayed at to see who the donors were that previously owned the work. More than half the time, the names were of private collectors. Also, Lawson created hundreds of paintings in his artistic career, many of his paintings did indeed end up in private hands, possibly an indivdual in New York city since a lot of Lawson's work currulates museum collections there. Thus, it is more than likely that The Harlem River (Rivershacks) ended up in a private collections before ending up in the home of the Kozol's.
