Marion Lewis Lothrop

In 1932, Mrs. Marie Ducharme Lothrop’s son, Colonel George Van Ness Lothrop of Michigan, married Marion Eddy Lewis Capron in the Wheaton College Chapel. Together, the couple inherited the paining after Marie’s death in 1947[1]. The portrait was probably housed at their home first in Bells Point, Leamington, Ontario[2]. Later, the Lothrop Family moved to Cadieux Road, in Grosse Pointe Michigan[3]. George Van Ness Lothrop died in 1947, in which case Mrs. Lothrop would have inherited the paining.

Mrs. Lothrop wanted to give the painting to Wheaton in part because she hoped to return it to Massachusetts where some of her husband's family was from. However, the Lothrop family had not lived in Easton since her husband's great grandparents, about 100 years before the painting was even created. To Mrs. Lothrop, the combination of the family ties, and her personal strong connection to Wheaton as an alum led her to donate the painting in 1950.
